"Who Learns? How, and Why"
.

WomenMatter: Facts and Trade-Offs is the only nonpartisan (not bipartisan) radio show on the internet on www.womenmatter.com. WomenMatter takes apart issues that we can still do something about -- stripping down the beliefs and opinions behind policy options so we can each weigh the facts.

In this country, we follow the philosophy of providing the best opportunities and education for each and every child. So why, as a nation, are we falling behind counties like China?

We know that everyone learns best individually, but this is not how we teach. Is it time to rethink our most basic assumptions about learning and education?

This show, Who Learns? How and Why takes a hard look at who is, and should be, responsible for teaching and learning in this country. Dr. Nancy Bauer and Dr. Edythe Austermuhl rethink the responsibilities that teachers, administrators, students, and taxpayers can -- and must --fulfill in order to maintain a competitive workforce in a free society.

Dr. Edythe Austermuhl is Chief School Administrator of Deerfield Township Elementary School District, grades pre-K through 8. She has a particular interest in integrating students with special needs and different learning styles within the classroom.

All of us are both learners and taxpayers. Do you know your own learning style? If you have children do you know theirs? As a taxpayer, are you willing to pay for individuals to learn in their own way, and at their own pace, in order to make our workforce more competitive in the world? Or do we follow the lead of countries like China and France, using an examination to test for different futures at a certain age?

WomenMatter will continue to track who learns, and who hold responsibility for learning and education in this country, providing the tools and information we need to make the discussion about education policy in this country more thoughtful by making our voices heard in the debate.
